well snow has been falling for the last couple of weeks now. we have had lots of snow and some rain thrown in. The sonnenhang & the brockenblick lifts have been open this weekend and the nordic skiing tracks have been cut.

there is more snow forecast for this week so the start of the season is picking up after a slow start.

The hexenstieg is a “classic” walk in the National park Harz. The route is 96km long, starts in Osterode, finishes in Thale and passes over the Brocken (highest mountain in north Germany).

25th June 2011 is the next round of the Harz MTB cup, The Wurmberg MTB marathon held in Braunlage with race distances for all levels from beginner to expert.

We have been getting some fantastic sunrise & sunsets lately, apparently it is because of dust from the Sahara in the atmosphere.

Snowfall in Sonnenberg

After 2 weeks of rain & warm temperatures we have winter coming slowly back, Its been snowing for the last 3 days on & off and has been below zero for a few days. we still need more snow but the langlauf tracks are still in quite good condition and one of the lifts in Sonnenberg is still open, All the rest of the lifts in the area (Braunlage & St Andreasberg) are closed at the moment waiting for more snow.

This is the winter view overlooking the nature reserve behind the hotel.

The Hotel is in the Harz national park which stretches from the low mountain range near Herzberg in the southern part of the mountains, across the Harz massif to its northern slopes near Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg. The Harz National Park in its eastern part in Sachsen-Anhalt consists of 8,900 hectares land and was set up in 1990. In 1994, the federal government of Niedersachsen established the western part of this park, covering 15,800 hectares. This means that the united Harz National Park consists of abt. 24,700 hectares now.
